Hangley Aronchick is proud to announce that Firm Chair Ronald Schiller has been named to the Philadelphia Business Journal’s 2020 Best of the Bar List. This award recognizes the top attorneys in the Philadelphia area, based on the high quality of their work and their commitment to serving their communities. Ron was recognized in the Business Litigation category, recognizing the important, high-profile matters he and his Insurance Coverage team have successfully handled over the last year.

A business trial lawyer, appellate lawyer, and counselor, Ron has a broadly diversified trial, appellate and arbitration practice. He advises financial institutions, insurers and reinsurers, technology companies, and other businesses in high-stakes litigation matters, particularly where taking the case through trial or appeal needs to be part of the client’s arsenal.

Ron represents insurers in the highest profile and highest stakes litigation across the country.  Currently, he and the insurance coverage litigation team are handling insurance coverage work in Nevada arising from the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting; handling multiple coverage cases arising from sexual abuse claims in Charleston, West Virginia; leading coverage litigation arising from appraisal rights actions and related D&O litigation in Delaware, New York, California, Illinois, and Florida; and representing insurers on coverage issues and litigation arising from allegations of sexual abuse involving the University of Southern California, other universities, amateur and professional sports associations, and several hospital systems. As part of one of the most watched cases in the country, Ron is leading the team in multiple matters arising from the Dr. Larry Nassar athlete abuse cases, including coverage litigation against Michigan State University, coverage litigation against USA Gymnastics in bankruptcy court in Indiana and the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and coverage litigation against the US Olympic Committee.

Dedicated to the improving the functioning of the legal system, Ron is an active member of the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS), a national, independent research center dedicated to facilitating continuous improvement and advancing excellence in American advocacy. Ron currently serves as a member of IAALS’ Initial Discovery Protocols for COVID-19 Insurance Claims working group. Formed as a result of the dramatic increase in court cases involving property damage claims arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, the project is developing business interruption litigation protocols for state and federal courts to help reduce conflict and costs in order to help both businesses and insurers resolve matters efficiently and fairly during this unprecedented time.

Ron has been consistently recognized in Chambers USA, with the publication noting that clients admire him as “someone who consistently wins big cases.” Chambers USA has further stated: “He is a particularly experienced adviser of businesses and insurers in litigation avoidance matters and settlement strategies. He exhibits further expertise in complex coverage cases and reinsurance disputes. Sources praise him for his clarity, stating that he is able to take ‘complex analytical work, distill it down, synthesize it and navigate it for his clients.’” Ron continued his Band 1 rating in Chambers USA 2020, with the publication calling him “outstanding and one of the best lawyers in Pennsylvania” and noting that “he knows his way around the courtroom and is very effective.” He has repeatedly been selected by his peers as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer and has been named in the Best Lawyers in America. Ron is also a Fellow of the American College of Coverage Counsel.

Ron and the other honorees will be recognized in October in a special supplement of the Business Journal and at an awards ceremony.
