Hangley Aronchick Segal Pudlin & Schiller Shareholder Steven T. Miano recently spoke on brownfields law for the Pennsylvania Brownfields Conference, co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania. Miano chaired the “Brownfields 101” panel at the conference, discussing the basics of Pennsylvania’s brownfields redevelopment program. Topics included Acts 2, 3 and 4; federal counterparts; managing liability issues; risk management; vapor intrusion; and long term stewardship of redevelopment projects including environmental covenants. He also served on the Planning Committee for the conference.
Miano has practiced environmental law for more than 25 years, and his practice includes all facets of environmental law and litigation, including federal and state cases involving the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Hazardous Waste laws, Superfund, brownfields redevelopment, and energy development. His clients include industrial corporations, commercial entities, and municipalities. Miano currently serves as Chair-Elect of the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources, and has been recognized as a leader in environmental law by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business(Band 1); Who’s Who of Business Lawyers; Pennsylvania Super Lawyers magazine; and Best Lawyers in America.
Before entering private practice, Miano was an Assistant Regional Counsel for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region III. He is an adjunct professor at Rutgers University Law School – Camden, where he teaches courses on environmental law. He is a frequent lecturer and has written about environmental legal issues for a variety of publications. He has also served as a course planner for several state and national environmental law programs. Recently, Miano co-authored a chapter on TMDLs for Third Edition of The Clean Water Act Handbook.
Miano earned his bachelor of science in Environmental Studies from George Washington University in 1982, and his law degree from the University of New Hampshire School of Law in 1985.
